Zithromax

   An antibiotic approved for the treatment of chlamydia and bacterial infections of the skin and respiratory tract. It may also have activity against MAC, toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis.

Antibiotic
A drug that stops or slows the growth of bacteria

Chlamydia
Chlamydia trachomatis is a common sexually transmitted disease, which often has no visible symptoms. If untreated, chlamydia can make a woman infertile or be passed to a baby during childbirth, causing pneumonia, eye infections and, in severe cases, blindness. Chlamydia is not routinely tested for but can be treated with antibiotics.

Bacterial
Of or pertaining to bacteria. For example, a bacterial lung infection.

Skin
Skin is an organ of the integumentary system; which is composed of a layer of tissues that protect underlying muscles and organs. Skin is used for insulation, vitamin D production, sensation, and excretion (through sweat).

Toxoplasmosis
A parasitic infection carried in cat feces and uncooked meat that can cause stillbirth or miscarriage when contracted by a pregnant woman. Toxoplasmosis is rare; an estimated one in 1,000 women is infected during pregnancy.

Cryptosporidiosis
"An intestinal infection characterized by diarrhea caused by a microscopic parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum. The parasite lives in the small intestine of humans and animals who pass it in their feces. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it resistant to chlorine disinfection. Both the disease and the parasite are popularly known as ""Crypto."" The disease is also called cryptosporidium enteritis."

Zellweger Syndrome
Zellweger Syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive congenital syndrome of multiple abnormalities. Some of the principal characteristics are cerebral dysfunction, defective myelinization, craniofacial abnormalities, renal cysts, hepatomegaly, and biliary dysgenesis. Absence of liver and kidney peroxisomes is the underlying basic defect.

Zenker's diverticulum
Pouches in the esophagus from increased pressure in and around the esophagus.

Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
Method of treating infertility by removing eggs from a woman's ovaries, fertilizing them in the laboratory with sperm from her partner or a donor, and inserting one or more of the fertilized eggs into one of her fallopian tubes.

Zollinger-ellison syndrome
A group of symptoms that occur when a tumor called a gastrinoma forms in the pancreas. The tumor, which may cause cancer, releases large amounts of the hormone gastrin. The gastrin causes too much acid in the duodenum, resulting in ulcers, bleeding, and perforation.

Zeitgeist
The general intellectual and cultural climate of taste characteristic of an era.
