  Temporal lobe trauma

Temporal lobe trauma

Injury to the temporal lobe of the brain, of either external or internal origin, with which there is associated an increased risk of temporal lobe epileptic seizures (psychomotor epilepsy, complex partial seizure) and, rarely, associated paraphilic attacks.

RELATED TERMS

Risk
In clinical trials, the probability of harm or discomfort for subjects, arising from the test product. Acceptable risk differs depending on the condition for which a product is being tested. A product for sore throat, for example, will be expected to have a low incidence of side effects. However, unpleasant side effects may be an acceptable risk when testing a promising treatment for a life-threatening illness.

Epilepsy
Sudden and recurrent disturbances in mental function, state of consciousness, sensory activity, or movements of the body, caused by paroxysmal malfunction of cerebral nerve cells. Epilepsy includes generalized convulsions in which there is sudden unconsciousness with falling and shaking of limbs, momentary lapses of awareness, and local movements and sensations in parts of the body, as well as other types of activity that may include bizarre automatic behaviour, strange memories, illusory and hallucinatory experiences, and changes in mood.

Paraphilic
Impersonating an older person and being treated as one by a partner - one of the stigmatic/eligibilic paraphilias.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDER / TM
Sometimes called "TMJ disease" or TM dysfunction, this is a painful condition of the jaw joint which can cause a variety of symptoms such as headaches, facial pain, tenderness or ringing in the ears, clicking or popping of the jaw, or pain when opening and closing the mouth. These problems are referred to as TM disorders. The causes of TM are not well understood and there are varying opinions on how to most effectively diagnose and treat these conditions. The causes of TM disorder may include trauma, arthritis and stress, or a combination thereof. Oral habits such as clenching or bruxing the teeth especially at night when a patient is asleep can slowly cause the muscles to fatigue and spasm without the awareness of the patient. Treatment is usually done in a step-by-step plan, as only minor corrective treatment may be necessary. If pain persists some patients may need more advanced treatment such as medication, psychological intervention, physical therapy or splint therapy. In some severe cases surgery may be needed to correct the joint.

Temporomandibular joint
