These problems are referred to as TM disorders. The causes of TM are not well understood and there are varying opinions on how to most effectively diagnose and treat these conditions. The causes of TM disorder may include trauma, arthritis and stress, or a combination thereof. Oral habits such as clenching or bruxing the teeth especially at night when a patient is asleep can slowly cause the muscles to fatigue and spasm without the awareness of the patient. Treatment is usually done in a step-by-step plan, as only minor corrective treatment may be necessary. If pain persists some patients may need more advanced treatment such as medication, psychological intervention, physical therapy or splint therapy. In some severe cases surgery may be needed to correct the joint.
