  Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium

Thinning hair. Rarely results in actual baldness.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Baldness
Baldness (formally alopecia) is the state of lacking hair where it usually would grow, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair-thinning condition that occurs in adult humans and many other ape species. Stress factors such as a regular lack of sufficient sleep may be able to accelerate the onset of hair loss in genetically prone individuals.

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Telomer
A small segment at the end of nuclear DNA that becomes shorter with every replication of the DNA. DNA will no longer replicate beyond a certain point of telomere reduction.

Telomerase
An enzyme composed of a catalytic protein component and an RNA template and that synthesizes the telomeric DNA at the ends of chromosomes. When active, telomerase can continually add to the length of the telomeres on the ends of chromosomes within a cell, thus conferring on that cell the ability to continue dividing past its normal lifespan.

Telomeres
"Caps" (made of repeated DNA sequences) found at the ends of chromosomes that protect the ends of the chromosomes from degradation. The telomeres on a chromosome shorten with each round of cell replication. Telomere shortening has been suggested to be a "clock" that regulates how many times an individual cell can divide (that is, when the telomeres of the chromosomes in a cell shorten past a particular point, the cell can no longer divide).

Telophase
The final stage of mitosis in which the chromosomes migrate to opposite poles, a new nuclear envelope forms, and the chromosomes uncoil. The last phase of nuclear division in eukaryotes when the segregated chromosomes uncoil and begin to reform nuclei. This is immediately followed (in most cases) by cytokinesis.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

TSR
An acronym from the words Testosterone Sterilized (female) Rat. A TSR manifests the persistent estrus syndrome. Lacking ovulatory cycles, she is sterile. The condition is induced experimentally by injections of testosterone prior to the age of eleven days. The first five days of life are the most sensitive or critical ones. Smaller doses are then effective. The effect is life-long.

Turner's syndrome
A condition marked by a chromosomal anomaly in phenotypic females with the chief pathognomonic symptoms of absence of ovaries (gonadal agenesis or dysgenesis) and short stature. The basic genetic defect is a missing sex chromosome, so that the total count is 45,X. There are several variants of this syndrome For example, the second X may, though present, be partially deleted. In one variant of the so-called mosaics, some cells of the body are 45,X and some 46,XX. Treatment includes giving female sex hormone at the age of puberty to induce adult appearance and menses. Girls with Turner's syndrome are almost invariably sterile. ; a condition marked by a chromosomal anomaly in phenotypic females with the chief pathognomonic symptoms of absence of ovaries (gonadal agenesis or dysgenesis) and short stature. Thorax
The Chest.

Therapeutic abortion
An abortion that is brought about intentionally. Also called an artificial or induced abortion. As opposed to a spontaneous abortion (a miscarriage).

Tanner staging
A growth chart used to assess the stage of puberty based on pubic hair growth, the development of genitalia in boys and breasts in girls.

Telogen effluvium

Temporal
Having to do with the side of the head.

Temporomandibular joint
TMJ. The joint between the lower jaw and the side of the head, located just in front of the ear.

Teratogen
An agent that causes physical defects in a developing embryo.

Tetany
A continuous muscle spasm.

Tongue
The muscular organ attached to the floor of the mouth. Used to speak, chew, swallow and taste.
