Steroid hormones

    A class of hormone biochemically constructed of the same components of which fats (lipids) are made They include the hormones of the testis, ovary, and adrenal cortex.

Hormone
A chemical substance formed in the body that is carried in the bloodstream to affect another part of the body; an example is thyroid hormone, produced by the thyroid gland in the neck, which affects growth, temperature regulation, metabolic rate, and other body functions.

Fats
One of the three main classes of food and a source of energy in the body. Bile dissolves fats, and enzymes break them down. This process moves fats into cells.

Hormones
Biological compounds that communicate information at a distance. Hormones require specific receptors to begin their biological action and use second messengers to initiate the cellular process that uses that information.

Testis
(plural testes). A male's testes are located in a pouch that hangs suspended outside his body. The testes produce testosterone and sperm.

Ovary
The female sex gland that contains ova, or eggs.

Cortex
The outer layer of the cerebrum, densely packed with nerve cells.

Repetitive, seemingly driven, and nonfunctional motor behavior (e.g., hand shaking or waving, body rocking, head banging, mouthing of objects, self-biting, picking at skin or body orifices, hitting one's own body).

Steri-stat is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): chlorhexidine gluconate.
