SSRI

    Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. A type of drug that is used to treat depression. SSRIs slow the process by which serotonin (a substance that nerves use to send messages to one another) is reused by nerve cells that make it. This increases the amount of serotonin available for stimulating other nerves.

Serotonin
A neurotransmitter important in filtering out information. If its levels are low, it can be the underlying cause of depression and violence.

Inhibitor
A substance that is added to another to prevent or slow down an unwanted reaction or change.

Depression
A mental state of depressed mood characterized by feelings of sadness, despair and discouragement. Depression ranges from normal feelings of the blues through dysthymia to major depression. It in many ways resembles the grief and mourning that follow bereavement, there are often feelings of low self esteem, guilt and self reproach, withdrawal from interpersonal contact and physical symptoms such as eating and sleep disturbances.

Nerve
Tissue that conveys sensation, temperature, position information to the brain.

Sarcoidosis
A chronic, systemic, granulomatous disease of unknown origin which may involve almost any body organ or tissue and is characterized by the presence of noncaseating nodules in the covering of the internal/external surfaces of the body.

Syncytium
A large cell-like structure formed by the joining together of two or more cells. The plural is syncytia.

Synapsis
The point of interaction between adjacent neurons or between a neuron and a muscle or gland, involving a chemical neurotransmitter. Plural: synapses.
