Respiratory burst
Respiratory burst Oxygen dependent increase in metabolic activity within phagocytic cells stimulated by bacteria or parasites, to be microbicidal.
RELATED TERMS--------------------------------------
Oxygen A chemical element essential for sustaining life.
Bacteria Single-celled microorganisms which can exist either as independent (free-living) organisms or as parasites (dependent upon another organism for life).
SIMILAR TERMS--------------------------------------
Respiration The act or process of breathing. The process by which a living organism or cell takes in oxygen from the air or water and uses it.
Respirator A device to protect the wearer from inhalation of harmful contaminants, classified by the amount of face coverage it provides and its method of protection, e.g. a half-face, negative-pressure, air-purifying respirator; or a full-face, pressure demand, supplied air respirator.
Respiratory distress syndrome Common in premature infants, RDS means a baby can't take in enough oxygen because his or her lungs aren't yet fully developed. With proper treatment, about 80 percent of babies recover fully.
Respiratory system The group of organs responsible for carrying oxygen from the air to the bloodstream and for expelling carbon dioxide.
Respondent conditioning Elicitation of a response by a stimulus that normally does not elicit that response. The response is one that is mediated primarily by the autonomic nervous system (such as salivation or a change in heart rate). A previously neutral stimulus is repeatedly presented just before an unconditioned stimulus that normally elicits that response. When the response subsequently occurs in the presence of the previously neutral stimulus, it is called a conditioned response, and the previously neutral stimulus, a conditioned stimulus.
Resporal Resporal is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): dexbrompheniramine maleate; pseudoephedrine sulfate.
PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS--------------------------------------
Restless legs A disorder characterized by aching or burning sensations in the lower and rarely the upper extremities that occur prior to sleep or may awaken the patient from sleep. Complying with an irresistible urge to move the affected limbs brings temporary relief. Sleep may become disrupted, resulting in excessive daytime hypersomnolence. This condition may be associated with uremia; diabetes; and rheumatoid arthritis. Restless Legs Syndrome differs from nocturnal myoclonus syndrome in that in the lattercondition the individual does not report adverse sensory stimuli and it is primarly a sleep-associated movement disorder.
Rosacea An acneiform eruption occurring mostly in middle-aged adults and appearing generally on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Three types are recognized: granulomatous, glandular hyperplastic with rhinophyma, and ocular.
Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) A solid-phase radioimmunoassay for detecting IgE antibody specific for a particular allergen.
Radioimmunoassay (RIA) A widely used technique for measurement of primary antigen-antibody interactions, and for the determination of the level of important biological substances in mixed samples. It takes advantage of the specificity of the antigen-antibody interaction and the sensitivity that derives from measurement of radioactively labelled materials.
Reagin Allergist's term for IgE antibodies.
Respiratory burst
Reticuloendothelial system A network of phagocytic cells.
Rheumatoid factor An autoantibody (usually IgM) which reacts with the individual's own IgG. Present in rheumatoid arthritis.
Rendu-Osler-Weber Syndrome Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome is hereditary hemorrhagic teleangiectasia (HHT), a genetic disorder that leads to vascular malformations.
Radiation colitis Damage to the colon from radiation therapy.
Radiation enteritis Damage to the small intestine from radiation therapy.
