Repetitive strain injury Harmful and painful condition caused by overuse or overexertion of some part of the musculoskeletal system, often resulting from work-related physical activities. It is characterized by inflammation, pain, or dysfunction of the involved joints, bones, ligaments, and nerves.
Restless legs A disorder characterized by aching or burning sensations in the lower and rarely the upper extremities that occur prior to sleep or may awaken the patient from sleep. Complying with an irresistible urge to move the affected limbs brings temporary relief. Sleep may become disrupted, resulting in excessive daytime hypersomnolence. This condition may be associated with uremia; diabetes; and rheumatoid arthritis. Restless Legs Syndrome differs from nocturnal myoclonus syndrome in that in the lattercondition the individual does not report adverse sensory stimuli and it is primarly a sleep-associated movement disorder.
Rosacea An acneiform eruption occurring mostly in middle-aged adults and appearing generally on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Three types are recognized: granulomatous, glandular hyperplastic with rhinophyma, and ocular.
Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) A solid-phase radioimmunoassay for detecting IgE antibody specific for a particular allergen.
Radioimmunoassay (RIA) A widely used technique for measurement of primary antigen-antibody interactions, and for the determination of the level of important biological substances in mixed samples. It takes advantage of the specificity of the antigen-antibody interaction and the sensitivity that derives from measurement of radioactively labelled materials.
Reagin
Respiratory burst Oxygen dependent increase in metabolic activity within phagocytic cells stimulated by bacteria or parasites, to be microbicidal.
Reticuloendothelial system A network of phagocytic cells.
Rheumatoid factor An autoantibody (usually IgM) which reacts with the individual's own IgG. Present in rheumatoid arthritis.
Rendu-Osler-Weber Syndrome Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome is hereditary hemorrhagic teleangiectasia (HHT), a genetic disorder that leads to vascular malformations.
Radiation colitis Damage to the colon from radiation therapy.
