Psychomotor agitation
Excessive motor activity that accompanies and is associated with a feeling of inner tension. The activity is usually nonproductive and repetitious and consists of such behavior as pacing, fidgeting, wringing of the hands, pulling of clothes, and inability to sit still.

Psychomotor attack
A form of epilepsy characterized by periodic behaviour disturbances such as chewing and lip smacking, staring and confusion. In some patients, picking at their clothes, or rubbing their hands or legs may occur. Although a psychomotor seizure may present a strange picture, the person experiencing it is usually unaware of the situation.

Psychomotor epilepsy
Seizure disorder involving abnormal discharge of neurons of the temporal lobe; sometimes called temporal lobe epilepsy. Since the seizure disorders were classified in 1970 and revised in 1981 according to the clinical form of the seizure and the EEG changes, this condition is also called complex partial seizure, wherein episodic changes in behavior are accompanied by loss of normal conscious awareness but the capacity to response to environmental stimuli remains. The seizure is preceded by an aura with complex hallucinations, fantasy, or sensory illusions. While in this state of altered consciousness, the patient may drive a car, continue to read a book, or carry out a ritualistic activity as would a robot, but will not respond to questions or commands. There is amnesia for the seizure, and recovery may take as long as an hour. Some paraphilic activities may be conducted while the paraphile is in a temporal lobe, psychomotor, or complex partial seizure state.

Psychomotor retardation
Visible generalized slowing of movements and speech.

Psychopath
A person with a mental disorder characterized by the conspicuous disregard for the rights and needs of others, the lack of remorse and the lack of empathy for others.

Psychopathological
Pertaining to the origin and nature of mental disorder.

Psychophysical function
A plot showing the variation in threshold (e.g. the dimmest light required for response) with some stimulus dimension (e.g. wavelength).

Psychosexual development
A series of stages from infancy to adulthood, relatively fixed in time, determined by the interaction between a person's biological drives and the environment. With resolution of this interaction, a balanced, reality-oriented development takes place; with disturbance, fixation and conflict ensue. This disturbance may remain latent or give rise to characterological or behavioral disorders.

Psychosis
A mental disorder with serious derangement of the thinking process, often including delusions or hallucinations.

Psychosocial dwarfism
Abuse-dwarfism.

Pertaining to mental health and spirituality.

Psychotherapy (psychotherapeutics, therapy)
Treatment of illness--particularly mental and emotional disorders--or "adjustment" problems mainly with psychological techniques. Its major categories are individual psychotherapy and group psychotherapy. Psychotherapy ranges from specialistic therapy to informal conversations, and from science-oriented techniques (e.g., rational-emotive therapy [RET]) to quackery, applied pop psychology, religious counseling, and methods akin to mesmerism. Psychotherapists include clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, "counselors," psychiatric nurses, and psychiatrists.

Psychotic
In the technical sense this term refers to a groups of severe mental illness where the person has periods of loses contact with reality. In a less formal manner, it is used to refer to the condition of having lost contact with reality. The person experiences severe impairment in his/her ability to function. All areas of a person's life are usually effected. Common symptoms: Hallucinations, delusions, withdrawal, impairment of intellectual function, lose of personal care skills.

Psychotropic medication
Medication that affects thought processes or feeling states.
