Prescription medicine

    The written direction for drugs for medicinal use, given by the doctor, dentist and nurse to the patient, for dispensation by the pharmacist.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Gynecological condition caused by an infection (usually sexually transmitted) that spreads from the vagina to the upper parts of a woman's reproductive tract in the pelvic cavity. PID takes different courses in different women, but can cause abscesses and constant pain almost anywhere in the genital tract. If left untreated, it can cause infertility or more frequent periods. Severe cases may even spread to the liver and kidneys causing dangerous internal bleeding and death.

Polycystic Kidney Disease
A rare inherited condition in which the kidney are composed of multiple cysts. Kidney cysts are associated with an increased incidence of cerebral aneurysm. Symptoms usually appear later (if they do at all) and include blood in the urine, flank pain, excessive urination at night and abdominal pain. Individuals may also have elevated blood pressure. Chronic (end-stage renal disease) renal failure is the most common result in the 5th to 6th decades of life.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
PCOS is a disorder in which the ovaries produce excessive amounts of male hormones (androgens) and develop many small cysts. Symptoms commonly include heavy, irregular or missed periods as well as acne, excessive hair growth on the face, obesity and infertility.

Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome occurs when the sciatic nerve passes through the piriformis muscle, as opposed to passing below it. This is seen in 12% of the population. Spasm of the piriformis muscle can mimic the pain of sciatica. This can be treated by muscle relaxants.

Placebo
A placebo is an inactive pill, liquid, or powder that has no treatment value. In clinical trials, experimental treatments are often compared with placebos to assess the treatment's effectiveness. In some studies, the participants in the control group will receive a placebo instead of an active drug or treatment. No sick participant receives a placebo if there is a known beneficial treatment.
