Phenylketonuria

    All babies born in the U.S. are tested at birth for PKU, a genetic disorder of a liver enzyme that disrupts normal body functions. If not carefully regulated by diet early in infancy, PKU can cause mental retardation.

Liver
The largest organ in the body. The liver carries out many important functions, such as making bile, changing food into energy, and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood.

Enzyme
A cellular protein whose shape allows it to hold together several other molecules in close proximity to each other. In this way, enzymes are able to induce chemical reactions in other substances with little expenditure of energy and without being changed themselves. Basically, an enzyme acts as a catalyst.

Diet
In nutrition, the diet is the sum of the food consumed by a body. Proper nutrition for a human requires vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fuel in the form of carbohydrates and fats. Imbalances between the consumed fuels and expended energy results in either starvation or excessive reserves of adipose tissue, or body fat

Infancy
Babyhood; the period of development between birth and the beginning of early childhood between the ages of two and three years.

Retardation
Delay or halt of any process such as mental or physical development.
