Related to the stomach and the duodenum, where pepsin is present.

Peptic ulcer
A sore in the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum; usually caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. An ulcer in the stomach is a gastric ulcer; an ulcer in the duodenum is a duodenal ulcer.

Peptide hormones
Class of hormones biochemically constructed of the same components of which proteins are made. They include neurohormones that govern the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland, e.g., gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). They include several of the hormones secreted by the pituitary gland, e.g., growth hormone.

Psoriasis
A common genetically determined, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by rounded erythematous, dry, scaling patches. The lesions have a predilection for nails, scalp, genitalia, extensor surfaces, and the lumbosacral region. Accelerated epidermopoiesis is considered to be the fundamental pathologic feature in psoriasis.

Pharyngitis
Inflammation of the mucous membrane and underlying parts of the (throat) pharynx.

Pharynx
Space behind the mouth that serves as a passage for food from the mouth to the esophagus and for air from the nose and mouth to the larynx.

Phalanges
The name Phalanges is commonly given to the bones that form fingers and toes. In primates such as humans and monkeys, the thumb and big toe have two phalanges, while the other fingers and toes consist of three.

Prophase
The early stage of nuclear division during which chromosomes condense and become visible. The initial stage of mitosis or meiosis in which chromosomes become visible and the spindle apparatus forms.

Parathyroid glands
Located in front of the neck, below the larynx (voice box). The parathyroid glands play a role in the regulation of the body's calcium balance.

Placenta
Organ that grows in the uterus during pregnancy and connects the blood supplies of the mother and baby.

Polyp
A growth that projects from the lining of mucous membrane, such as the intestine.

Prolactin
A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland which affects growth of the mammary (related to the breasts) glands.
