  Parvovirus



Parvovirus

    May cause an arthritis in adults (females mainly) and behaves like rubella. Causes erythema infectiosum (Fifth disease or 'slapped cheek syndrome') in children.

Arthritis
Inflammation of a joint, usually accompanied by pain, swelling, and stiffness, and resulting from infection, trauma, degenerative changes, metabolic disturbances, or other causes. Arthritis occurs in various forms, such as the arthritis associated with infections, osteoarthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Many forms of vasculitis can also be associated with arthritis.

Rubella
A mild, highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious birth defects if a pregnant woman is afflicted. Women who haven't had it should make sure they're immunized before conception.

Erythema
Redness of the skin.

Disease
Illness or sickness often characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Disruption sequence: The events that occur when a fetus that is developing normally is subjected to a destructive agent such as the rubella (German measles) virus.

Cheek
The side of the face forming the side wall of the mouth. The cheek bone is part of the temporal bone of the skull that provides the prominence of the cheek.

Parvocellular pathway
Pathway that begins with the midget (parvo) ganglion cells in the retina and terminates within the parvocellular layer of the LGN. Conduction slower than that of Magnocellular Pathway.

Pyorrhea
Older term for periodontal (gum) disease.

Paget's disease
A disease characterised by accelerated bone turnover. The bone becomes enlarged, hyperaemic and fragile. ('Osteitis deformans')

Palindromic rheumatism
A condition characterised by episodic articular or periarticular pain, often with redness. The pain may be intense but rarely lasts longer than 2 or 3 days and resolves totally afterwards with no sequelae. May ultimately evolve into a more recognisable arthropathy (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis in a proportion of those with rheumatoid factor).

Palmoplantar pustulosis
May occur in SAPHO - see 'SAPHO'.

Pannus
A vascular tissue which arises in a rheumatoid joint at the junction between articular cartilage, synovium and capsule. May adhere to joint surface and extend across it.

Parvovirus

Pathergy
Occurs in Behcet's syndrome. Sterile pustule forms at the site of sterile needle puncture.

Pauciarticular
Refers to an arthropathy with involvement of 4 or fewer joints.

Pelligrini-Steida disease
Pain and calcification at the femoral site of attachment of the medial collateral ligament of the knee - follows injury.

Periostitis
Inflammation involving the periosteum. May result in new bone formation.

Prozac
Prozac is fluoxetine: a selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor commonly prescribed as an antidepressant (trade name Prozac).
