Myocardial infarction (Heart attack)
Myocardial infarction (Heart attack) A sudden obstruction of blood flow through a coronary artery that results in the death of heart tissue. The immediate cause of a myocardial infarction is usually a thrombus that forms near the site of ruptured plaque.
RELATED TERMS--------------------------------------
Obstruction A blockage in the GI tract that prevents the flow of liquids or solids.
Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.
Artery A blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body.
Death 1. The end of life. The cessation of life. (These common definitions of death ultimately depend upon the definition of life, upon which there is no consensus.) 2. The permanent cessation of all vital bodily functions. (This definition depends upon the definition of "vital bodily functions.") See: Vital bodily functions. 3. The common law standard for determining death is the cessation of all vital functions, traditionally demonstrated by "an absence of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac functions." 4. The uniform determination of death.
Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.
Tissue Biological tissue is a group of cells that perform a similar function. The study of tissues is known as histology, or, in connection with disease, histopathology. The classical tools for studying the tissues are the wax block, the tissue stain, and the optical microscope, though developments in electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and frozen sections have all added to the sum of knowledge in the last couple of decades.
Infarction Tissue death due to lack of oxygen-rich blood.
Thrombus A blood clot.
Plaque Soft sticky substance that accumulates on teeth; composed of bacteria and food debris due to inadequate dental hygiene.

Myocardial infarction Or heart attack. Occurs when one of more regions of the heart muscle experience a severe or prolonged decrease in oxygen supply caused by a blocked blood flow to the heart muscle.
Myocardial Infarction Also called a heart attack; results from permanent damage to an area of the heart muscle. This happens when the blood supply to the area is interrupted because of narrowed or blocked blood vessels.

This valve allows blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle and then prevents the back flow of blood into the left atrium during ventricular contraction.

Monounsaturated Fat A fat composed mostly of monounsaturated fatty acids.
Multigated Acquisition Scan (MUGA scan) A nuclear scan that evaluates the pumping function of the ventricles.
