  Megakaryocyte

Megakaryocyte

The giant cell of the bone marrow that has a greatly lobulated nucleus and gives rise to blood platelets.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Cell
Fundamental structural unit of all life. The cell consists primarily of an outer plasma membrane, which separates it from the environment; the genetic material (DNA), which encodes heritable information for the maintainance of life; and the cytoplasm, a heterogeneous assemblage of ions, molecules, and fluid.

Bone
Bone refers either to a hardened connective tissue or to one of the individual structures, or organs, into which it is formed, found in many animals. Bones support body structures, protect internal organs, and (in conjunction with muscles) facilitate movement; are also involved with cell formation, calcium metabolism, and mineral storage. The bones of an animal are, collectively, known as the skeleton.

Marrow
The tissue which fills the cavities of most bones; the medulla. In the larger cavities it is commonly very fatty, but in the smaller cavities it is much less fatty, and red or reddish in color.

Nucleus
Plural: nuclei. The compartment of a cell that contains the chromosomes.

Blood
The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.

Platelets
Cells found in the blood.

Megatrials
Massive randomised clinical trials that test the advantages of marginally effective experimental drugs by enrolling 10,000 or more subjects.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Movement agnosia
selective loss of motion perception without loss of any other perceptual capability. Occurs after bilateral damage in the cortex of Middle Temporal Area(MT) or Medial Superior Temporal Area(MST).

Medial superior temporal area (MST)
Seems to be involved in visually tracking moving target. Projects along with Middle Temporal Area (MT) to the dorsolateral pontine nuclei in the brain stem.

Middle temporal area
Characterized by strong motion-directionally sensitive neurons with large receptive fields organized into columns. Some neurons respond to the whole rather than the component motion of moving plaid patterns. Implicated in the analysis of movement, and stereoscopic depth. Receives input from layer 4B in V1 and thick stripes in V2. Projects to Medial Superior Temporal Area (MST).

Meningocoele
Hernial protrusion of meninges.

Malposition
Faulty or abnormal position of a part of the body.

Megakaryocyte

Meningoencephalitis
Inflammation of the brain and its meninges.

Metastatic
A tumor that has transfered from one organ (or part) to another not directly connected to it.

Microhepatia
A small liver.

Morphologic diagnosis
The interpretation of the abnormalities in terms of severity, time, lesion and anatomic site. For example: severe, chronic, glomerulonephritis.

Mucous
Adj. Relating to or resembling mucus.
