    Lack of the lactase enzyme. Causes lactose intolerance.

Lactase
An enzyme in the small intestine needed to digest milk sugar (lactose).

Enzyme
A cellular protein whose shape allows it to hold together several other molecules in close proximity to each other. In this way, enzymes are able to induce chemical reactions in other substances with little expenditure of energy and without being changed themselves. Basically, an enzyme acts as a catalyst.

Lactose
The sugar found in milk. The body breaks lactose down into galactose and glucose.

Lactic Acidosis
The buildup of lactic acid in the body. The cells make lactic acid when they use glucose (sugar) for energy. If too much lactic acid stays in the body, the balance tips and the person begins to feel ill. The signs of lactic acidosis are deep and rapid breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Lactic acidosis may be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis or liver or kidney disease. Lactic acidosis is also a rare side effect of a diabetes medication called metformin.

Lactogenic hormone
The pituitary hormone that stimulates the production of milk from the mammary glands.

Lactose

Inability to digest lactose, the sugar in milk. This condition occurs because the body does not produce the lactase enzyme.
