Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki Disease Kawasaki disease, also known as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, mucocutaneous lymph node disease, infantile polyarteritis and Kawasaki syndrome, is a poorly-understood illness that affects the mucous membranes, lymph nodes, blood vessel walls, and the heart. It was first described in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki. Systemic vasculitis of childhood characterised by fever, changes in the extremities culminating in desquamation, red eyes and cervical lymphadenopathy. May lead to the development of coronary arterial aneurysms at a later date.

Blood The life-maintaining fluid which is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets; blood circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries; it carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.
Heart The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.
Systemic Disease or symptoms that affect many different parts of the body.
Vasculitis Inflammation throughout the body of the blood vessels.
Childhood 1. The time for a boy or girl from birth until he or she is an adult. 2. The more circumscribed period of time from infancy to the onset of puberty.
Fever When body temperature rises above its normal level - defined as 98.6 degrees F, though it varies by individual and time of day. A fever is the sign of an immune system at work and usually indicates an infection.
Desquamation The shedding of cells from the surface of the skin or mucous membranes.
Cervical Having to do with the neck (cervical spine) or the cervix of the uterus.
Lymphadenopathy Any disease process affecting a lymph node or lymph nodes.
Development The process of growth and differentiation.

Human males usually have an XY karyotype. The XXY chromosome arrangement is one of the most common genetic abnormalities, occurring in about 1 in 1,000 male births, but the symptoms that may result from having the extra chromosome are less common.
Kashin-Beck disease An endemic arthritis found in parts of China and Russia. Caused by eating bread made from a fungus-infected grain.
Keinbock's disease Osteonecrosis of the lunate bone in the wrist.
Keratoderma blennorrhagica A rash on the soles which may occur in Reiter's syndrome. Resembles psoriasis.
