  H-Y antigen

H-Y antigen

Y-chromosome-induced histocompatibility antigen. It is believed to adhere to the surface of all male mammalian cells, including the Y-bearing sperm of fertilization. In the course of normal embryogenesis, it is held responsible for programming the cells of the undifferentiated gonadal anlage into a testis.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Histocompatibility
Literally, the ability of tissues to get along; in immunology, it means identity in all transplantation antigens. These antigens, in turn, are collectively referred to as histocompatibility antigens.

Antigen
A substance which, when present in animal tissue, stimulates the production of antibodies

Sperm
A sperm cell, or spermatozoon (pl. spermatozoa) (in Greek: sperm = semen and zoon = alive), is the haploid cell that is the male gamete. It is carried in fluid called semen, and is capable of fertilising an egg cell to form a zygote. A zygote can grow into a new organism, such as a human. Sperm cells contain half of the genetic information needed to create life. Generally, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm, through the chromosomal pair "XX" (for a female) or "XY" (for a male).

Fertilization
The combining of the genetic material carried by sperm and egg to create an embryo. Normally occurs inside the fallopian tube (in vivo) but may also occur in a petri dish (in vitro).

Undifferentiated
Not having developed into a specialized cell or tissue type.

Anlage
"1. In biology, whatever precedes something else. 2. In embryology, a precursor or forerunner or a more mature structure. For example, the stomach anlage. 3. In psychoanalysis, a predisposition to a given trait or personality characteristic. Borrowed directly from the German for a plan or arrangement, derived from the verb anlegen meaning ""to lay on"" in the sense of ""to prepare or set up."" The plural is anlagen. Sometimes anlage is used interchangeably with primordium."

Testis
(plural testes). A male's testes are located in a pouch that hangs suspended outside his body. The testes produce testosterone and sperm.
