Excimer laser
A laser that emits very concentrated light in the ultraviolet (UV) region of the spectrum.

Excision
1. Surgical removal, as in the excision of a tumor. 2. The removal as if by surgery, as in base excision repair.

Excisional
Pertaining to the act of excision, of removal by surgery. An excisional biopsy is one in which the lesion is removed by the biopsy.

Excisional biopsy
A biopsy in which an entire biopsy in which an entire lesion, is removed. A excisional biopsy is in contrast to an incisional biopsy in which only a sample of tissue is cut into (incised) and removed.

Excitement phase
The first of the four sexual phases delineated by Masters and Johnson.

Erythema
Redness of the skin.

Erythema multiforme
An eruption of flat or raised spots of skin as a result of hypersensitivity to certain drugs or allergies.

Eustachian tube
The narrow tube connecting the nose and middle ear to allow air pressure in the middle ear to equalize with the outside environment.

Exacerbate
Cause something to increase in severity. To make more intense, irritate.

Skin rash.

Glands that secrete chemicals externally, either through a tube or duct.

ECG (electrocardiograph or cardiograph)
A tracing of the electrical activities of the heart muscles by means of an electrocardiogram, which is connected to sensors placed on the body.ÿ This procedure is used to detect and monitor suspected heart disorders.

Exercise ECG
Monitoring the electrical activity of the heart muscles while the heart is under stress, usually induced by the subject walking on a treadmill.

EEG (electroencephalograph)
A tracing of the electrical activity of the brain by means of an electroencephalograph connected to the sensors placed on the scalp.ÿ In this way, certain conditions such as epilepsy, brain tumours and other diseases or injuries to the brain can be diagnosed.

EMG (electromyograph)
The recording, by means of fine needles inserted into muscles, of electrical currents generated into the muscles.ÿ This is used in the diagnosis of muscle and nerve disorders.
