Epicardium

    The membrane that covers the outside of the heart.

Membrane
A flexible layer surrounding a cell, organelle (such as the nucleus), or other bodily structure. The movement of molecules across a membrane is strictly regulated in both directions.

Heart
The hollow, muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the circulatory system.

Epicanthal fold
A fold of skin that comes down across the inner angle (canthus) of the eye. The epicanthal fold is more common in children with Down syndrome and other birth defects than normal children and so is of value in diagnosis. Although some dictionaries state that this eye fold is found in peoples of Asian origin, this is not true. The normal Asian eyefold is continuous with the lower edge of the upper eyelid and actually appears distinctly different than a true epicanthal fold.

Epicapsular stars
Remnants left on the eye of the hyaloid canal, from development in the womb.

Epicene
Common to both sexes; neither one nor the other.

Epicondylitis
Enthesopathy at humeral epicondyle. May be medial (golfer's elbow) or lateral (tennis elbow).

Epicort
Epicort is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) approved in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): hydrocortisone.

Enteroscopy
An examination of the small intestine with an endoscope. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth and stomach into the small intestine.

Enterostomal therapy nurse
A nurse who cares for patients with an ostomy. See also Ostomy.

An ostomy, or opening, into the intestine through the abdominal wall.

Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
A blood test used to find Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Also used to diagnose an ulcer.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis
Infection and swelling of the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine. The infection is caused by white blood cells (eosinophils).

Epicardium

Epidural anesthesia
Method of pain relief used during surgery or childbirth in which an anesthetic is injected into a small area surrounding the spinal cord (the ePIDural space) to block pain nerve impulses from the lower half of the body.

Episiotomy
Incision made in the skin between the vagina and anus to enlarge the vaginal opening and facilitate childbirth.

Epithelial cells
One of many kinds of cells that form the epithelium and absorb nutrients. See also epithelium.
