Dorsal pathway
One of two theorized systems of visual information processing. Information thought to progress toward the parietal cortex V1-> V2 -> MT -> MST -> STP. Functions in comprehension of spatial arrangement.

Dorsum
The back or posterior side of a structure. "Dorsum" is the Latin word for the back. Something pertaining to the dorsum is dorsal. The dorsal surface of the hand is the back of the hand, the side opposite the palm. The dorsal surface of the foot is the back of the foot, the side opposite the sole. The dorsal vertebrae are the thoracic vertebrae; they form part of the back. The dorsal roots of the spinal nerves are the back roots, the posterior roots.

Disk
A round, flat structure, particularly the fibrous cartilage layer between two vertebrae (the bones that make up the spine). Also called intervertebral disk.

Removal of an intervertebral disk of the spine.

Dislocation
Displacement of a bone from a joint.

Distal
A location farther from a point of reference. For example, the foot is distal to the knee, relative to the center of the body.

Diuresis
Increased elimination of urine.

A flow of liquid or vapor directed onto or into a part of the body.

Down syndrome
A genetic disorder characterized by some degree of mental retardation and by various physical malformations, such as slanted eyes and a broad face.

DPT
A vaccine containing antigens from diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus.

Dressing
A bandage for an external wound.

Dropsy
Abnormal buildup of fluid in tissues or a body cavity.
