  Comedone



Comedone

    Commonly know as black heads or white heads. This is where a hair follicle becomes plugged with sebum. When the lipid or sebum is exposed to the environment it is oxidized an turns black (black heads). When the follicle is closed and not exposed to the environment they are cream colored (white heads).

Follicle
The tiny shaft in the skin through which a hair grows, and sebum is excreted from sebaceous glands to the surface of the skin.

Sebum
The oily substance produced by sebaceous glands.

Lipid
A fatty substance in the blood.

Environment
The sum of the total of the elements, factors and conditions in the surroundings which may have an impact on the development, action or survival of an organism or group of organisms. The environment is as opposed to genetics. We are the product of our genetic inheritance and our environment.

Cream
A word with many meanings that, in medicine and pharmacy, refers to a water-soluble preparation applied to the skin. An ointment differs from a cream in that it has an oil base.

The plural of comedo, the primary sign of acne, consisting of a dilated (widened) hair follicle filled with keratin squamae (skin debris), bacteria, and sebum (oil). Comedones may be closed or open.

Carbohydrates

Substances similar to the hormone of the adrenal glands called cortisone; corticoids are differentiated into two groups – mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids applied both locally and systemically, mainly as anti-phlogistics, immunosuppressives, anti-asthmathics or in the treatment of an allergy.

Chemotaxis
The movement of cells in response to chemical messengers. The movement of neutrophils and macrophages into damaged tissues is brought about by signals released by damaged tissues, and bacterial products. The term applies to the movement of any organism attracted by a specific chemical, which may be a suitable nutrient.

Clindamycin
Clindamycin is a semisynthetic antibiotic and derived from lincomycin by the addition of chloride. Clindamycin is sold under brand names such as Dalacin and Cleocin.Is has often been prescribed topically to treat acne. Caution: has provoked severe colitis.

Cyproterone acetate
Cyproterone acetate is a progestin that also blocks the effect of androgens on the skin. It is very useful for the treatment of hirsutism. A rare side effect is liver problems. Cyproterone acetate is available in oral contraceptive pills (Diane® and Dianette®) and a brand name is Androcur®.

Cetrotide
Cetrotide is a gonadotropin releasing hormone that helps control hormonal responses in women's body affecting the development of eggs. Cetrotide is blocking the trigger effect of GnRH. This blocking action stops the premature LH surge in women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation before they begin. In doing so, this allows eggs to reach the level of development needed for fertilization.

Cushing's disease
Cushing's disease is also known as hyperadrenocorticism. It is a disease that results from an increase in corticosteroid secretion from the adrenal gland.
