Causal treatment
A form of treatment which deals with the cause of a disease, not only the symptoms. Specific allergy vaccination is a causal treatment, the use of antihistamines is a symptomatic treatment.

Causes of cancer
Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases. Benign tumors are not cancer; malignant tumors are cancer. Most cancers are named for the type of cell or the organ in which they begin. When cancer spreads (metastasizes), the new tumor has the same name as the original (primary) tumor. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer for both men and women. The second most common cancer in men is prostate cancer, in women it is breast cancer.

Caustic
A chemical that can cause burns.

Capsule
The thick membrane that joins bones making up a joint.

Capsulitis
Inflammation on the capsule (see 'capsule' above).

Carpal tunnel
The space in the wrist where tendons and nerves to the hand are found.

Cauda equina syndrome
Neurogenic claudication, resembling intermittent (arterial) claudication. Results from narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis).

Cervical spondylosis
Degenerative process in the spine in the neck. A combination of disc deterioration and osteoarthritis.

Charcot joint
Unusually destructive hypertrophic arthropathy resulting from impairment of sensory nerve supply. May occur in syphilis, syringomyelia and diabetes mellitus.

Charnley
Orthopaedic surgeon who devised first replacement hip prosthesis.

Cheiroarthropathy
Stiffness and thickening of the soft tissues of the hand, often with a 'waxy' appearance of the skin. May mimic scleroderma or other inflammatory arthritis. Occurs in long-standing insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Chondrocalcinosis
Calcification of articular cartilage. May be associated with attacks of joint inflammation that may mimic gout ('Pseudogout').
