Each circuit has arterial, capillary, and venous components.

Care proxy, health

Carminative
An agent that prevents or relieves flatulence (gas in the gastrointestinal tract) and, in infants, may help in the treatment of colic. The origin of the word "carminative" is particularly curious. It was borrowed from the French carminatif (masc.), carminative (fem.). Virtually all English-language dictionaries state that the French took the word from the Latin carminare, to card wool. However, a respected French dictionary Le Petit Robert indicates that carminare meant nettoyer, to cleanse. The confusion appears to stem from the fact that to card wool was to cleanse it. Thus, a carminative cleanses the bowels.

Carney complex
A multiple neoplasia syndrome with cardiac, endocrine, cutaneous, and neural tumors together with spotty pigmentation of the skin, particularly on the face, lips, and trunk, and mucosa. The Carney complex may simultaneously involve multiple endocrine glands such as the pituitary, adrenals, and testes. The cardiac tumors are myxomas which can arise in any chamber of the heart. Although almost always benign, cardiac myxomas are associated with stroke from tumor embolism and with heart failure from obstruction of a valve. Myxomas also may occur in the breast, testis, thyroid, brain, or adrenal gland. Systemic symptoms such as fever, arthralgia, and a lupuslike rashes may accompany the myxomas (and may be due to the production of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 by the myxoma).

Carotene, beta
An antioxidant, a substance that protects cells against oxidation damage which, it is thought, can lead to cancer. Beta carotene is converted, as needed, to vitamin A.

Carotenemia
Temporary yellowing of the skin due to excessive beta carotene in the diet. The offending substance, beta carotene, is an antioxidant (a substance that protects cells against oxidation damage) and is converted by the body to vitamin A.

Carotenoid
One of a group of compounds that includes beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin which are converted to vitamin A and are referred to as provitamin A carotenoids. The sole known role of carotenoids is to act as a source of vitamin A in the diet. Fruits and vegetables are the main source of carotenoids in the human diet.
