Attenuated virus
Attenuated virus "To attenuate is to weaken or to make (or become) thin. Now ""attenuate"" refers to procedures that weaken an agent of disease (a pathogen). An attenuated virus is a weakened, less vigorous virus. A vaccine against a viral disease can be made from an attenuated, less virulent strain of the virus, a virus capable of stimulating an immune response and creating immunity but not causing illness."

An inherited predisposition to colorectal cancer characterized by fewer than 100 adenomatous polyps in the colon and rectum. It is said to be attenuated because there are fewer polyps than in classic familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). People with attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis (AFAP) also tend to be older at the diagnosis of their polyps (average age of 44 years) and cancer (average age of 56 years), 10 to 15 years later than in classic FAP. The right side of the colon tends to be involved in AFAP and rectal involvement is rare. AFAP is transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner.
