Anhidrotic

Pertain to anhidrosis, too little sweating. Hidrosis meaning sweating, so an-, too little + hidrosis = too little sweating.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Anhidrosis
Not sweating. From the Greek an- meaning a lack of + hidros meaning sweat = lack of sweat. The inability to sweat may seem a blessing but it is not, since to sweat is to be able to stay cool. Anhidrosis creates a dangerous inability to tolerate heat.

An-
"Prefix very much employed in medicine and all of the health sciences, indicating ""not, without, or -less."" For example, the prefix ""an"" figures into these words: anemia (without blood), anophthalmia (no eye), anotia (no ear), anoxia (no oxygen). The ""an-"" usually becomes ""a-"" before a consonant as, for example, in alexia (not read), aphagia (not eat), aphonia (not voice, voiceless). The prefix ""an-"" comes from the Greek meaning ""not."""

Angiotensin converting enzyme 2
An enzyme, abbreviated ACE2, that is an essential regulator of heart function. It may also be involved in the embryonic development of the heart. ACE2 was discovered in 2000. The gene for it has been mapped to the X chromosome (band Xp22).

Angiotensin II receptor blocker
A medication that blocks the action of angiotensin II, permitting the blood vessels to relax and dilate (widen), which lowers the blood pressure. Abbreviated ARB.

Aniline
A chemical compound implicated, along with o-toluidine, in the causation of bladder cancer. Aniline and o-toluidine, both aromatic amines, are used in the manufacture of a variety of dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and chemicals employed in the manufacture of rubber. The primary routes of exposure to these compounds are inhalation and dermal contact. There is no doubt that aniline and o-toluidine are carcinogens -- agents that cause cancer. Evidence reported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) clearly associates the occupational exposure to o-toluidine and aniline with an increased risk of bladder cancer among workers. The risk of bladder cancer is greatest among workers with possible and definite exposures to o-toluidine and aniline, and the risk increases with the duration of exposure.

Animal-to-human transplant
See Xenotransplantation.

Anion
A negatively charged ion. Pronounced an-I-on. An anion is as opposed to a cation, which is a positively charged ion.

Anion gap
"A measurement of the interval between the sum of ""routinely measured"" cations minus the sum of the ""routinely measured"" anions in the blood. The anion gap = (Na+ + K+) - (Cl- + HCO3-) where Na- is sodium, K+ is potassium, Cl- is chloride, and HCO3- is bicarbonate. The anion gap can be normal, high, or low. A high anion gap indicated metabolic acidosis, the increased acidity of the blood due to metabolic processes. A low anion gap is relatively rare but may occur from the presence of abnormal positively charged proteins, as in multiple myeloma."

Aniso
In hematology, short for anisocytosis.
