Amastia
Amastia A rare condition wherein the normal growth of the breast or nipple does not occur. Unilateral amastia (just on one side) is often associated with absence of the pectoral muscles. Bilateral amastia (with absence of both breasts) is associated in 40% of cases with multiple congenital anomalies (birth defects) involving other parts of the body as well.

Condition

Within the mammary gland is a complex network of branching ducts. These ducts exit from sac-like structures called lobules, which can produce milk in females. The ducts exit the breast at the nipple.

Amazia should be distinguished from amastia, which is a significantly rarer condition wherein the breast and nipple were never present in the first place. Unfortunately, amazia and amastia are often not distinguished from one another but are erroneously seen as synonymous.
