  Achromobacter

Achromobacter

A genus of gram-negative, aerobic, motile bacteria that occur in water and soil. Some are common inhabitants of the intestinal tract of vertebrates. These bacteria occasionally cause opportunistic infections in humans.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Aerobic
Requiring the use of oxygen. Exercise that conditions the heart and lungs by increasing the efficiency of oxygen intake by the body.

Bacteria
Single-celled microorganisms which can exist either as independent (free-living) organisms or as parasites (dependent upon another organism for life).

SIMILAR TERMS
--------------------------------------

Achromatium
A large group of aerobic bacteria which show up as pink (negative) when treated by the gram-staining method.

Achromatopsia
Characterized by a lack of color vision with poor visual acuity, nystagmus, and sensitivity to sunlight. No treatment is available except, for example, sunglasses for the sensitivity to light.

Achromycin
See: Tetracycline.

Achromycin v
Achromycin v is a prescription or over-the-counter drug which is (or once was) legal in the United States and possibly in other countries. Active ingredient(s): tetracycline hydrochloride.

Achromycin V
An antibiotic originally produced by Streptomyces viridifaciens, but used mostly in synthetic form. It is an inhibitor of aminoacyl-tRNA binding during protein synthesis.

PREVIOUS AND NEXT TERMS
--------------------------------------

Acid Agents, gamma-Aminobutyric
Substances used for their pharmacological actions on GABAergic systems. GABAergic agents include agonists, antagonists, degradation or uptake inhibitors, depleters, precursors, and modulators of receptor function.

Acid Activations, Amino
The first step of protein synthesis, whereby an amino acid reacts with adenosine triphosphate in the presence of aminoacyl RNA synthetase to produce an amino acid adenylate, which provides the energy necessary for the attachment of the amino acid to a specific transfer RNA molecule.

Aciclovir
A GUANOSINE analog that acts as an antimetabolite. Viruses are especially susceptible. Used especially against herpes.

Achyranthes
A plant genus of the family AMARANTHACEAE, order Caryophyllales, which has been used in traditional medicine (MEDICINE, CHINESE TRADITIONAL).

Achromycin V
An antibiotic originally produced by Streptomyces viridifaciens, but used mostly in synthetic form. It is an inhibitor of aminoacyl-tRNA binding during protein synthesis.

Achromobacter

Acid beta Glucosidase
A glycosidase that hydrolyzes a glucosylceramide to yield free ceramide plus glucose. Deficiency of this enzyme leads to abnormally high concentrations of glucosylceramide in the brain in GAUCHER DISEASE. EC 3.2.1.45.

Acid Base Imbalance
Disturbances in the ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIUM of the body.

Acid Base Equilibrium
The balance between acids and bases in the blood plasma. Normally it results in a slightly alkaline state with an excess of hydroxyl ions in comparison to hydrogen. The balance is achieved by the offset of the ingestion and production of acidic and basic material by the amount of acidic and basic material metabolized and excreted by the body.

Acid Aspiration Syndromes
A type of pneumonia resulting from the aspiration of food, liquid, or gastric contents into the upper respiratory tract.

Acid Antagonists, gamma-Aminobutyric
Drugs that bind to but do not activate GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID receptors, thereby blocking the actions of endogenous GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID or GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID agonists.
